Church

The origins of the parish church, St Mary and St Lawrence, go back to the founding of an Augustinian Priory circa 1112. The priory’s possessions were acquired by the King (Henry V) around 1414 and later granted to King’s College, Cambridge by Henry VI in 1448. The modern church contains remnants of the original priory buildings.

School

The village school was held in the current Village Hall building. The building appears to have been erected in 1871 as a consequence of the 1870 Elementary Education Act, to accommodate 44 children.

“If the Great Bricett Church of England School, reported as being in course of erection in Midsummer, 1871, is completed and opened as a Public Elementary School, under a certificated teacher, no further accommodation will be required.” – Suffolk Mercury, 10 May 1873, p2, c4

Census

I have completed a study of the 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses of Great Bricett – which involved creating profiles of people recorded in each census and linked to other family members where possible. This can be seen on the WikiTree website. (The remaining censuses are in progress.)
